“Move Over, Through, or Around Obstacles” is a core Warrior Task (071-326-0503) essential for survival and maneuver in combat. The primary objective is to negotiate natural or manmade obstructions—such as walls, barbed wire, and open danger areas—while maintaining security and minimizing exposure to enemy fire. While it is generally best to move around (bypass) an obstacle, this is not always possible, requiring specific individual and team techniques for direct negotiation.
Core Negotiation Techniques
Infantrymen use distinct methods depending on the type of obstacle encountered:
1. Crossing Over a Wall
- Method: Crouching near the wall, pull yourself up while keeping a low silhouette.
- Execution: Roll quickly over the top, avoiding standing upright to minimize exposure.
- Post-Action: Immediately move to cover on the far side.
2. Negotiating Barbed Wire
Hazards: Check for booby traps or warning devices before attempting to cross.
Methods:
- Cutting: Use cloth to muffle sound; cut lower strands first to keep the gap less visible.
- Under: Slide on your back, pushing forward with heels while managing your weapon to avoid snagging.
- Over: Use material like wood or mats to cover barbs before crossing.
3. Crossing Exposed Danger Areas (Roads, Streams)
- Site Selection: Choose points with natural cover and concealment, often near bends.
- Action: Observe the far side first, then cross quickly and quietly.
- Security: Immediately establish cover on the far side.
Tactical Principles for Obstacle Negotiation
- The Buddy System: Never negotiate obstacles alone; ensure a buddy provides overwatch or covering fire.
- SOSR Technique: For larger breaches, use Suppress, Obscure, Secure, and Reduce.
- Communication & Stealth: Report obstacles immediately and maintain noise/light discipline, such as cutting wire near posts.
