Patient Assessment at the Fort

Drill 2: Choking

Goal: Introduce simple patient assessment, patrol base concepts, Pistol Drill #1, concepts of patrol base radio, incident within an incident

Drill#2 uses a very simple first aid drill to teach patient assessment. Patient assessment is the systematic, continuous collection of data—via history, physical exam, and diagnostics—to determine a patient’s health status, identify needs, and guide treatment. Key components include primary assessment (ABC: Airway, Breathing, Circulation), vital signs, a comprehensive head-to-toe physical exam, and psychosocial evaluation to establish baseline health.

Drill #2 starts at the fort and then trainees follow a 5-station orienteering trail with obstacles and hazards that have to be negotiated by the team. IWI procedures are based around extracting an injured patient back to the fort for treatment and further evacuation, or on-site medevac from a helicopter or professional EMS unit.

Blood pressure and vital signs are part of the Team Medic training included in the drill.
