Our goal was to break as much of this topic down into simple digestible points that you can then use to make an informed decision about what radio is going to be best and how to employ them.
Tactical Team Communications
Tactical team communications facilitate real-time, secure, and reliable information exchange among battlefield units to ensure situational awareness and synchronized operations. These systems include encrypted radios (HF, UHF/VHF), satellite links (TACSAT), and digital networks designed for high-stakes combat or operational environments.
Key Aspects of Tactical Communications
  • Purpose: To transmit orders, intelligence, logistical updates, and maintain a Common Operating Picture (COP).
  • Technologies:
    • HF Radios: Examples include the AN/PRC-138, AN/PRC-150, and AN/PRC-160 (with Automated Link Establishment – ALE).
    • Headsets: Over-the-ear, single-lead, or dual-lead setups often integrate hearing protection with communication capabilities.
    • Platforms: Integrated Tactical Networks (ITN) link handheld radios, vehicle-based systems, and aerial relays (UAS) to provide Over-the-Horizon (OTH) communications.
  • Implementation: Critical at the squad level, allowing for team coordination when moving and acting.
  • Operational Security: Encryption and secure channels are vital for protecting information from intercept.
  • Voice & Data: While digital data is growing, voice communication remains the bedrock.
Core Communication Principles
  • Reliability: Systems must function in tough environments, including areas with limited infrastructure.
  • Mobility: Ensuring communication persists regardless of terrain or distance.
  • Command and Control (C2): Transforms data into operational capability.
