LARP operations at Fort Edwards run year-round. In the summer the temperatures can reach almost 120 degrees F and there’s a large swing between day and night temps. In a given 24-hour period a Ranger can experience both extremely hot and moderately cold weather. Hyperthermia is when you accidentally cook yourself and hypothermia is the act of freezing the death, and you can have the opportunity to do both on any given day, even if you don’t get shot at.

The environment itself can be a much bigger threat than the raiders and the Legion.

Survival Advice: The Rule of Threes

In general:

  • You can survive three minutes without breathable
  • You can survive three hours without shelter (including adequate clothing) in harsh Summer in the Mojave is one of the harshest environments on Earth.
  • You can survive three days without drinkable
  • You can survive three weeks without

While local conditions and personal constitution can influence these numbers somewhat, the priorities remain consistent. Don’t go searching for food until shelter and potable water have been secured.

Most beginner Mojave Ranger School operations will be within a few miles of a town or settlement, so if you don’t kill yourself with hyper or hypo thermia then you can walk out to safety, unless you go East. Fort Edwards is on the western edge of the Mojave Desert and there are millions of miles of nothing to the East, Death Valley to the Northeast and the Grand Canyon to the southeast.
