The Followers of the Apocalypse, or simply called the Followers, are a humanitarian organization originating in New California that appear multiple times in the Fallout series.

The Followers’ core goal is to provide education and medical services to those in need, as well as furthering research in non-military areas to establish a bulwark against the loss of humanity’s technological advancement after the Great War destroyed the world.

Once close allies of the New California Republic on the West Coast, by the 23rd century, they severed official ties due to disagreements over the republic’s increasingly expansionist foreign policy, though still maintain a degree of civility, with both the NCR and Followers understanding the other is needed if they are to rebuild civilization.

Forgoing preaching salvation in favor of direct-intervention humanitarianism, the Followers are generally welcomed by the inhabitants of the wasteland in their mission to provide services, namely medical care and agricultural instruction, often without expectation of reward. Conversely, it’s often the case that those in positions of power regard them as seditious anarchists; though such accusations are not entirely without truth, the organization as a whole has no interest in seizing power.

Followers and Mojave Rangers

Mojave Rangers coordinate with the Followers of the Apocalypse in the Mojave in multiple ways,

• Mojave Rangers provide transportation on convoys and security for Followers of the Apocalypse operations in areas with Ranger Training Teams
• Mojave Rangers host first aid stations throughout the Mojave, staffed by Followers or Team Medic trainees
• Mojave Ranger teams escort Follower medics and trainers on routes to towns and settlements

Medical Training

Mojave Ranger Team Medics and Medic Instructors are trained by the Followers and assist with Follower medical missions in all the areas with Ranger Training Teams.

Non-Military Research and Development of Resources

Mojave Rangers provide security and assistance to the Follower’s medical missions and the Followers provide medical training and tech assistance for the Rangers,

• Mojave Rangers host tech recycling and training stations around the Mojave
• Mojave Rangers host ham radio stations and provide training and messaging services for Mojave residents
• Mojave Rangers host electric generator training and assist with wind and solar generators
• Fort Edwards has a Desert Gardening & Water Management training area where Followers assist with gardening courses and projects
• Fort Edwards hosts regular trainings on weaving, woodworking, metal smithing and other post-apocalyptic skills

The Followers of the Apocalypse were founded by former vault dwellers and individuals living near the Glow.^[2][1] To avoid a spreading sickness, the group gathered their members and moved north, subsequently establishing the organization.^[3] The group’s leader, Nicole, lost her parents in the journey, and mentioned this event in her rationale for founding the organization, stating that “it was time the killing stopped” and that her goal was “to make this land the way it used to be, before the war” in an effort to avoid repeating history.^[4][5] By 2280 the Followers had outposts in every major city within the New California Republic.^{[Pub 2]}

Boneyard

The Followers established their operations in the Boneyard Library.^[6] The organization focuses on proper education and reestablishing pre-War techniques of survival such as methods of agriculture, providing stability to those living throughout the wastelands.^[7][8] The group teaches farmers and ranchers about crop rotation and engages in several different types of research and study.^[9] The library offers free classes.^[10]

Nicole describes the main mission of the group, clarifying that the Followers are not religious, but led by a set of principles.^[11][12] Individual researchers study pre-War history and tribal culture.^[13] Expeditions to gather knowledge including information on tribal dialects were organized.^[14] Edward Sallow and Bill Calhoun were sent to the Grand Canyon for this purpose.^[14]

Mojave

Another group of Followers from the Boneyard established a regional hub in the Mojave’s Old Mormon Fort.^[15][16] The administrator for this region is Julie Farkas, stating that their primary goal is “the free exchange of ideas” to build a world “free from war and poverty by sharing knowledge and resources.”^[17] The Followers accept new members on a case by case basis.^[18] They are assigned by the administrator based on their skill set.^[19][20][21]

Research on creating alternative medicinal treatments from flora such as barrel cacti were undertaken in an effort to replicate finite resources procured via pre-War hospitals.^[22][23] Other members were sent to reviews the technology of the HELIOS One solar power.^[24]

Members engage in outreach, assisting communities such as Westside with learning how to grow crops in the desert climate.^[25] The group both serves to repair the destruction caused by the expansion of the New California Republic as well as works alongside the NCR to serve refugees outside of New Vegas.^[26][27] In addition, reconstruction efforts such as assisting with the installation of water pumps is an initiative undertaken by the Followers in Freeside.^[28]

A medical clinic was established and is led by Dr. Usanagi, relying on charity to provide low-cost medical services to the less fortunate.^[29] Usanagi reiterates the group’s viewpoint on technology, its purpose being for basic necessities, like food, water, and medicine, and the knowledge should be shared instead of hoarded.^[30]

Usanagi’s clinic offers implants to improve performance, as well as medical care to treat physical injuries and mental trauma.^[31][32] Profit generated at the clinic are used to purchase additional supplies.^[33] The group relies on trading with nearby groups, charging for routine medical care, and from charitable donations.^[34] In exchange for donations of Med-X, Rad-Away, and Fixer, discounts are offered on medical services.^[35][29]
